How to Preserve Rabbit Hides with Alum and Salt 2 of 2

This video tutorial shows you the process of preserving rabbit hides to use for crafting by using aluminum sulfate and salt in a brine or “pickle.”

Alum tanning is a good way to preserve rabbit hides for crafting, or even for pillows, but this method is not considered a true tan.  You cannot get the pelt wet after its done or it will shrink up and get stiff again.

If your intentions are to craft anything that requires a wet wash, you will want to use another, more true tanning method such as brain tanning and smoking to get hides you can actually clean with water without ruining your work.
